I did a lecture last night in York University on evidence and knowing yourself.
Whatever the other merits of Obama's win it was a good result for evidence, after a year when the Texas republicans tried to ban critical thinking lessons from schools (on the grounds that it encourages students to question their beliefs) and Paul Ryan achieved a new record for the number of blatant untruths in a single speech.
One of the main thrusts of the lecture is the importance of borrowing - learning to adopt, adapt and copy others. The great artists learn to do that before they create radical new art forms. Maybe public servants and policy makers could do this better too.
