The Amazings is a new social venture that supports people who are retired or about to retire (aka The Amazings) share their skills, knowledge, experience and passion with their local community.
Website: www.theamazings.org
The Amazings encourages people to run learning sessions based on skills and experience they've accrued over a lifetime, at a time and in a way that suits them.
There are a wide range of Amazing Activities already on offer - everything from foraging, history walks, ballroom dancing, street photography, hairstyling and cooking.
An Amazing can come forward with an idea for an activity either via a website or on the ground 'Street Team.' This is then advertised through a website, social media and on the ground flying. The Amazings handle the bookings - and each tutor is paid 70 per cent of the ticket price after the activity is complete.
The price of a ticket is just enough to validate everyone's commitment to the activity. An Amazing can do whatever they want with the money. Some keep it for themselves; others donate it to a charity of their choice.
The Amazings is championing a new way for people that have left or are about to leave full time employment to 'give back' to their community.
The award: The Amazings has been awarded £50,000 to carry out further technical development of the site, recruit more 'Amazings', cover some of the scheme's running cost and raise their national profile in preparation to scale outside of London by the end of 2012.
