DIY Learn Module of the Month: Building Partnerships Map

DIY Learn is Nesta’s online learning programme in innovation, developed in partnership with the Open University. Launched last year, it features ten bitesize modules designed to help you start practicing innovation in your everyday work.

The DIY Learn modules are based on the most popular innovation tools and methods from Nesta’s DIY Toolkit. In partnership with the Rockefeller Foundation, we launched the DIY Toolkit in 2014 to support people working in development to invent, adopt or adapt ideas that can deliver better results. DIY Learn builds on the Toolkit by guiding you through each tool step-by-step so that you can start putting them into practice.

We’re showcasing each module from DIY Learn here on the Nesta website month by month, and our sixth Module of the Month is the Building Partnerships Map.

Building Partnerships Map

Complex problems often have several different yet related causes and effects – with organisations from different sectors trying to solve things individually. Combining your capacities and resources with other organisations can harness the knowledge spread across them, and help you to achieve greater progress towards a common goal or shared vision.

The Building Partnerships Map is a tool that can be used to facilitate the creation and development of a partnership. It often takes a considerable investment of time to build the high quality working relationships that underpin effective collaboration, and the Map breaks the process into steps so that you can anticipate difficulties and challenges ahead.

The DIY Learn module walks you through the Building Partnerships Map and offers guidance so that you can make the most of using it. By taking the module, you will be able to:

  • describe the Building Partnerships Map and explain when it can be useful and appropriate
  • identify key activities involved at each stage of the Building Partnerships Map
  • plan a partnership process using the Building Partnerships Map tool
  • explain how and when to use the Building Partnerships Map to resolve difficulties and challenges

Watch the Building Partnerships Map module introductory video below, or go straight to the module.

We estimate this module will take between two and three hours to complete for an independent learner with a good level of English. It is divided into smaller study sessions, each of which follows a standard pattern to make it easier for you to plan your time. As you work through the module there are some in-text activities to help test your understanding of the material, and it finishes with a series of self-assessment questions.

Feedback and further resources

We hope that you enjoy the module, and we’re always delighted to hear from our learners. Please send feedback on the module to [email protected]. We are particularly keen to hear what you have done with the skills and tools you have learned.

While the module has been designed to be studied independently this is not the only way it can be used. The DIY Learn Trainers Handbook also provides guidance on using all the modules as a basis for group training in a classroom setting.
