FixMyStreet for councils helps move street issue reporting online. It builds on the existing MySociety FixMyStreet website in order to create a back end that can integrate easily into councils' existing systems. Service users can easily report a problem by marking it using the online map. This information is then relayed to the relevant people in street teams to take action on the issues.
The site aims to help councils to deliver savings and improve customer satisfaction through more responsive and efficient reporting and repairing of faults. FixMyStreet for Councils is also cloud hosted which means that MySociety carry out hosting and maintenance for a single fee.
The service operates as a self-service experience, by drastically reducing manual data entry by staff, as it relies upon local people to report information themselves online, and to tag the location of the problem through a cleanly designed map interface. It also helps reduce duplicate reporting by showing problems already known to the council.
How the idea developed
Development of the site as a service for councils was supported by the Nesta programme Make IT Local, which aimed to support innovative applications for public data sets. MySociety was awarded £30,000 to develop their existing successful street fault reporting website 'Fixmystreet' to make a more bespoke offer to councils. The existing site had come across some difficulties in integrating with council systems and the investment aimed to help adapt the offer to make it easier for council Customer Relationship Management systems and street teams to take advantage of the service. ![Fix My Street webpage [original] Fix My Street webpage [original]](http://admin.nesta.org.uk/library/images/FixMyStreet2.jpg)
The modified version was developed in partnership with Barnet council as a prototype, and then continued to developed by MySociety and Barnet beyond the end of the Nesta funded programme. It now exists as a package offer for councils to pick up easily and integrate into their systems. Four clients are now using the service, with more in development.
