Nesta and Innovation Unit have provided a range of tailored support and funding to six teams - each with a compelling approach to People Powered Health for patients with long term conditions.
In addition to this support we have helped them embed and scale the new approaches in their localities by gathering evidence of their effectiveness. We know that People Powered Health has the potential to deliver better outcomes for patients while saving the NHS money.
We've helped the teams collect evidence on their effectiveness through developing local business cases, collecting patient-reported health and wellbeing measures as well as benefits to healthcare workers. We've provided tailored support around commissioning, care planning, user engagement, service design and system mapping.
In order to scale, the right system conditions are needed - new approaches to commissioning, outcomes and ways of measuring value, and workforce culture and practice. We've been working with our teams to support their systems to change, developing an understanding of what People Powered Health systems need to look like.
Our ambitions for People Powered Health go beyond supporting the individual teams to scale the work in their localities. We want the learning from the teams to influence the national debate. We're supporting this through a range of activities:
1. Working alongside the teams to capture learning and evidence that will support the spread of People Powered Health approaches, including developing an overarching business case.
2. Developing a range of tools and resources for practitioners, providers and commissioners who want to apply People Powered Health.
3. Developing a framework that argues for the changes necessary to support system transformation.
4. Contributing to the national debate around collaborative approaches to healthcare by sharing evidence in a variety of ways, with system leaders and opinion formers, providers and commissioners of healthcare and organisations representing patients.
