Coventry University and South Birmingham Primary Care Trust are working in partnership to develop a career development service for Nurses and Allied Health Professionals (including occupational therapists, physiotherapists, speech and language therapists).
Currently these workers have the option to retire at 55 from the NHS and are often forced to retire early due to ill health and a lack of alternative non-physical job options.
This service will prepare employees for retirement or continuing to work in another role. This may include skills development to open up different opportunities, identifying strengths that could be used to transition to another sector or work longer for the NHS, perhaps in a different role.
The service is being developed as part of the performance review system that NHS professionals already have every year and will support the development of staff and prepare them for using their skills in retirement. It will support the professional development of older workers.
