Age UK Hackney: Forward Thinking Programme

Age UK Hackney, together with commonground, has developed a peer-to-peer advice and support service for men in their 50's and 60's.

This video explains the project in more detail and tells the story of how it was developed.

The service offers older men local activities with their peers merged with planning and advice activities. This service is tackling older men's dependence on public services and welfare benefits and aims to build the social capital of older male community members and develop a peer-to-peer group who will provide support and advice for their peers.

The service has been developed with a group of older men and tested with other men in the local community. Service users are supported by Age UK Hackney to take part in delivery of the service as facilitators and service ambassadors.

The service aims to help older men meet people in their local area, make more informed choices regarding their later years and share their own experiences in a supportive environment. It is currently being piloted in Hackney until July 2011.
