4. Turbine Prize

Year: 1823-1827
Promoter: French Society for the Encouragement of Industry
Prize: 6,000 Francs (Today's value $26,500)
Winner: Benoit Fourneyron

This was a prize for development of a large scale commercial hydraulic turbine, launched by the French Society for the Encouragement of Industry. 

The winner was 25 year old Benoit Fourneyron, whose turbine was implemented throughout Europe. This had a great effect in flourishing the New England textile industry.
