5. Liverpool and Manchester Railway Locomotive Prize

Year: 1829
Promoter: Liverpool and Manchester Railway
Prize: £550 (Today's value $59,500)
Winner: George and Robert Stephenson and Henry Rooth

The challenge was set to build a locomotive weighing less than six tons. This locomotive also had to pull a load of 20 tons at 10 miles per hour.

This challenge was part of the on-going railway track work that was going on to create better transport links between Liverpool and Manchester.

The prototypes were tested over an eight day period, in what came to be known as the Rainhill Trials.
