The government is not doing enough to create the right climate for innovation investment, say more than two thirds of GB business leaders surveyed, who think that too little is being done to give businesses the confidence to invest in new products, services or ways of working. The YouGov findings are released as Nesta, the UK’s innovation foundation, publishes its economic plan for innovation-led growth, Plan I.

Shadow chancellor Ed Balls has today called for the 4G windfall to fund housing and stamp duty breaks. In September, Nesta's economic plan for innovation-led growth, Plan I, highlighted the need to invest the 4G windfall back into science, technology and innovation - not into mostly 19th and 20th century infrastructure such as housing, rail and roads.

Nesta research challenges the myth that foreign investment is hollowing out the UK's economy

New research commissioned by Nesta shows the importance of foreign investment to employment and innovation in the UK. Foreign-owned businesses increased their share of UK employment from 11% to 19% between 1997 and 2010. They are more likely to develop new IP, products or processes than similar UK firms, and they are more likely to encourage their UK suppliers to innovate.
